When you get used to seeing someone in power, it is hard to remember that these people are just as human as you are. They begin to seem like otherworldly beings who simply don’t have to do the day-to-day routines that we all have to go through. This can become negative after a while because we tend to forget that world leaders are just people that have emotions too and that they can make mistakes as well. We even forget that they need things like food and sleep to function. But it is understandable that you wouldn’t be able to see the person who wields power over your whole country on the same level as you would see yourself or your peers.
World leaders are just people
In an effort to remind people that even the greatest world leaders are just people as we are, Christina Guggeri, an Italian artist, set out to create a set of pictures which she named ‘Il Dovere Quotidiano’ or ‘The Daily Duty’. These images show a few of the most well-known people in the world performing the most basic of human functions i.e using the pot.
Guggeri took inspiration from the idea that humans are all the same everywhere. No matter who you are, you have to answer nature’s call. And when sitting on the toilet, you’ll probably have your most private moment of the day. She chose to portray these prominent figures going about this everyday task to externalize a concept that most people believe in. But the images also serve to show that even world leaders are bound by these basic bodily functions. The public which put those people in power also expects them to do their ‘daily duty’ to the people.
As controversial as some of these images are, Guggeri is happy to see that most people took the pictures in a humorous manner. Her viewers appreciated seeing that even people like the Pope and their President had to use the pot just like everyone else.
As simple as the pictures seem, they actually take a lot of time and effort.
There’s a lot of space to play around and Guggeri has to exercise a lot of patience to put together each one. She uses a very well known graphics program and each picture is a montage from parts of many different images. They involve a lot of perseverance, artistic skills, and a very strong sense of humour. She has promised that this set of pictures is not the last to come from this project and that she’ll soon be releasing pictures with many other popular figures.
