There might be a lot of things about our jobs which make us feel frustrated all the time. But then again, we still have to work in order to pay our bills and make sure that we can live a comfortable life. A lot of people are fortunate enough to have jobs which pay very well and are the subject of much envy of the people around them. But there are many who are not as fortunate.
Following is a list of 8 tough jobs that will make you appreciate your job more:
1. Manufacturing Sewage Covers
Every city with a sewage system obviously needs covers for it. These workers from India manufacture covers which are used in New York City. They do not enjoy pleasant working conditions at all, having to toil away in humidity and heat. They produce covers for the sewage systems of one of the most coveted and developed cities in the world. How ironical!
2. Excavating for Sulphur
Sulphur is a word that is generally associated with unpleasant or toxic things. But there are individuals whose daily bread comes from mining this mineral from 2600 feet inside volcanoes. It is also known as the devil’s gold. This would not be on this list if the workers had appropriate safety regulations or tools.
3. Sewer Cleaning
People who engage in this line of work are extremely crucial to the functioning of our vast cities. The workers have to climb into pools of human faeces as well a lot of other waste in order to clean the sewers. It largely happens in developing or underdeveloped countries. There are no mandates for ensuring safety gear or even human rights for these workers who are often ostracized from the rest of the community.
4. Mining for Diamonds
Extracting this precious rock sounds like a dream to a lot of us. But the workers who actually extract this precious rock have to face the harsh realities in which they toil away. Diamonds are extracted from muddy pools using nothing but bare hands. Sounds rough but what is worse is that they cannot take the diamonds for themselves.
5. Salt Extraction
Imagine working under the sun where you handle salt all the time. This is bound to have harmful long-lasting effects on your body. Salt workers get paid a paltry $224 monthly for breaking large salt crystals for transportation.
6. Electric Line Maintenance Worker
These electric line maintenance workers repair high voltage electricity lines and maintain them. All in the absence of proportional safety measures; this fetches them from $35,000 to $40,000 USD annually.
7. Mosquito Test Subjects
These individuals volunteer to be bitten by the pests so that the scientists and bioengineers can manufacture medicines for all of us. Had it not been for the contribution of these people, we would still have deadly and incurable diseases.
8. Arctic Employment
Snowy and iced-up ships obviously need to be cleaned in order for them to continue providing their services. The harsh winters in the Arctic cause buildup of thick ice and snow on ships which are cleaned by these workers. The sad part is they receive only mediocre pay.
